If you think that this is an instructional DVD--it is not.There are no frame-in-frame closeups showing Larry's playing techniques.This is a video of Larry playing a few tunes in a studio with a couple of his old bandmates.If you're into that, the DVD is interesting.

If you expect some guidance concerning funk bass playing, you will be very disatisfied.For funk bass instruction try the Francis Rocco Prestis (Fingerstyle Funk - VHS only) and Alex Sklarevski (Slap Bass) videos..both are great.

The Art of Solo Fingerpicking : How to Play Alternating-Bass Fingerstyle Guitar Solos (book and CD) (Guitar Books) [Paperback] Review

This is Vol. 2 of Mark Hanson's "The Art of Travis-Style Picking," one of the best starter manuals for would-be fingerpickers, and it picks up where that excellent book/CD left off. Most of the compositions are by Hanson; if you love Fahey, Kottke, Ackerman, de Grassi, etc. and wouldn't mind learning how to play like that, this is your ticket. The two David Blakeley numbers are also quite fine, as are arrangements of Libby Cotten's "Freight Train" and John Renbourn's version of "White House Blues." I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

This is an outstanding collection of songs for the young baritone or bass singer.Joan Frey Boytim has excellently compiled many songs in many styles from many different historical eras, all of which make a great learning experience.
In response to the reviews above, it looks like someone does not know how to read music.The CD is meant to play simply the piano part so that you have something to practice your part with with.It is an excellent tool toward vocal independence.

This bass blues book is excellent. Why? Because it has a great variety of styles-from Chicago to New Orleans to Texas blues! And the CD makes it even better. It also has more than several variations for most of the examples, great slow blues, and great blues classics. Also included are variations for endings and turnarounds. There are 43 examples on the CD, covering the good ol' blues up into more rock blues. There is a great version of "Stormy Monday" on this that I just play the heck out of! If you are just getting into Jamaican music or know somebody who is you have to purchase this book. It will teach you how to play ska, rocksteady, dub and reggae. It's great for either novices or experts. I wish I had thisway back when I first started playing The Police. It comes with a CD andyou can jam along or create your own bass lines after you have learned thebasic idea. Seeing both the notation and the tab written out helps inlearning how these bass lines are born and how they work with each style.

Serious Electric Bass (Contemporary Bass Series) [Paperback] Review

This book is packed with endless info on the subject - scales and chords. By practicing the excercises in it, one can begin developing a good ear and understand why basslines of some songs are played the way they are.
In fact, this book is teaching me that there are many contemporary songs that are done in modes of common scales. I didn't even know such a thing existed!
Another thing is that you get a great appreciation for the neck and the note values along it by using this book in practice.
You would have to be able to sight-read for this book though, since tab is not used.
The first few sections - particularly the part on setting up and adjusting your bass - are invaluable, as they offer clear instructions that demystify the fear of 'DIY' on your bass.
The only problem I had was that one of the pages (I think it was p.55) was double-printed, so the page before it was not there. Otherwise, this book is an important investment for players who want to understand the relationships between chords and to develop their ear.
